Today’s modern industries require materials that are able to resist the wear caused by friction, erosion and corrosion both at room and high temperatures and in particularly dangerous conditions or environments. Corrosion and abrasion have many different aspects:

The different types of corrosion can be divided into :
- Corrosion in a humid environment;
- Corrosion in a dry environment;
- Corrosion in a solid environment;

Corrosion can be divided into different types and can involve both production or storing plants.

Abrasions can be divided into:
- humid sliding abrasion;
- dry sliding abrasion;
- humid rolling-contact abrasion;
- dry rolling-contact abrasion;

Therefore, abrasion and corrosion are fundamental elements in metal consumption.

Corrosion- and abrasion-prevention techniques are of fundamental importance given the vastness and complexity of metal applications; such phenomena can emerge in the most disparate circumstances.

Resistance to abrasion is proportional to hardness but only as long as the microstructure remains the same: Martensite obtained at low temperatures, presents a greater resistance to abrasion than martensite with the same hardness obtained at high temperatures or troostite, sorbite or than kainite. Some needs have been satisfactorily resolved by plating the surfaces of the materials used in order to obtain on the external surfaces a resistance to wear and therefore improve the life of equipment, for example:

- Blades and teeth for diggers;
- Grinder sleeves;
- Conveyor screws;
- Grinders and jaws;
- Grinding rollers and rotors (coal or cement);
- Rolling machines;
- Sliding guides;
- Knives and shearing machines;
- Cement and coal mills;
- Anti-wear plates;
- Various applications;
